Dreaming Lucid - What Does It Mean?

By Hilary Porter

Has it ever happened to you that you are dreaming in your sleep and suddenly the knowledge dawns on you that you are dreaming? That is, you understand that it's a dream. May be you have felt it for some fleeting moments before waking up or it may also be that you have never experienced anything like this before. Whatever the case may be, this is what is known as lucid dreaming, where you know that you are dreaming and are fully conscious about it.

Lucid Dreaming experiences can vary in its nature and intensity from person to person who is fortunate enough to experience it. At one end there are people who fall asleep and while dreaming they suddenly feel that it is only a dream. That is, the realization suddenly dawns on them.

In the other extreme, consider the fact that you pass into the realm of dream fully conscious and awake. You see your dreams, knowing fully well that it is not reality and have full control to see or live whatever it is that you want in your dream.

Moreover, the very fact that it is not real gives you the opportunity to do anything and everything that you want as it cannot harm you in real life. Thus, this is the highest form of lucid dreaming and the lucidity is considered to be at its heights.

Lucid Dreaming also has its share of skepticism and misconceptions. Firstly, some say that it promotes escapism. It is a mere way to escape from real life into the dream world. But it can be said that any normal man needs to sleep and can have dreams in that time span. Hence, even if he indulges in lucid dreaming then, it is not cutting out part of his real life. On the contrary, it can be argued that reading a book may be more of an escapism to another world while you are rooted in reality.

The second misconception is one which sometimes thinks of lucid dreaming as an occult practice. This thought is even fuelled by the belief that dreams convey some message to people and hence activities such as lucid dreaming results in the loss of that. But since lucid dreaming is not something that happens to people everyday or every time they sleep, it is a misconception that is not much justified.

Moreover, if a person is an expert at lucid dreaming, it can be safely concluded that he has also mastered the art of dream recall at first. So, he may be better equipped than the usual man in recalling his dreams and analyzing valuable insights present if any.

But the maximum advantage that lucid dreaming gives, should be appreciated in case of people suffering from nightmares because if one suffers from nightmares, the best thing for him would if the knowledge that he is just dreaming and it is not reality. Thus, lucid dreaming may be stated as one of the greatest out of the world experiences one can ever enjoy where he becomes the king of the world.
