Undertakers, also known as Funeral Directors, are professionals who manage activities and ceremonies related to funerals. Given below are some of the important skills and qualifications that undertakers must possess to succeed in their job.

Since an undertaker may be needed at any time of day or night, the person venturing into this profession should be willing to be on call for 24 hours. This is essentially an outdoors task, which will need him to be outside the office for long hours.

An undertaker should be an excellent communicator and a patient listener. With clients hailing from so many religions, traditions and cultures, he should be able to interact with and handle each one of them successfully. An understanding and compassionate attitude will be a great help in this job. As an undertaker, he is also required to comfort the family members in their moment of grief, and he should not allow pain or sorrow to cloud his abilities.

As an undertaker, an individual must project a dignified and calm personality, while seeing that his behaviour doesn't heighten the sorrow of the bereaved family members and relatives.

Undertakers should have vast knowledge and profound respect for the religious beliefs and sentiments of different cultures and communities. They should be aware of various customs and practices followed by different sects during the funeral service.

Excellent management and the ability to organize affairs are essential skills for an undertaker. A number of services will need to be organized by the undertaker and this will need good communication and managerial skills from the undertaker.

Legalities and other formalities to be followed in case of a death must be known to the undertaker who will have to receive required approvals etc for the funeral proceedings and other related matters. He must also be conscious of the administrative procedures to be adhered to for obtaining death certificates, insurance claims etc.

Finally, an undertaker should know driving and should possess an appropriate driving license, as he may be required to drive hearses and limousines.
