Funeral Services - A Brief Guide

By Jannet Ford

Death is an inevitable reality that all of us have to face but organizing the funeral of a family member can still be an unnerving experience. However, like most unpleasant things in life, it must be dealt with, and you will have to make some arrangements for the funeral service. Almost all funeral homes offer their services related to making funeral arrangements and they can offer you assistance, but you must keep in mind a few things.

A funeral is a reflection of a person's life and it must be carried out accordingly. There is a classic pattern which most funeral services adhere to, and any change would generally depend on specific religious and cultural preferences of the deceased and his or her family.

The very first phase of a funeral service can range from a couple of hours to many days and it is called visitation. In this ceremony, the friends and family gather to remember their loved one. The next stage is formal funeral proceedings at any site like a church, a chapel, a mortuary or at some other place that bore a special significance for the deceased person. However, you should ensure that you have called for a funeral coach, if the place of the funeral is at some distance.

Once this is over, the family and relatives move to the cemetery to take part in the next phase of the funeral. This can be handled by either a relative of the deceased or the clergy depending upon the preference of the family. You will have to consider various aspects, including who will lead the service, the type of flowers you would require, and if you want a photo or any other article owned by the deceased to be exhibited.

The final phase of the proceedings is the burial, and the spot for it can be any place as per the choice of the family or of the deceased person. The dead person can be buried in plots owned by the family or in mausoleums, or be cremated after which their ashes can be scattered where they had desired.
