Planning A Funeral Service For A Deceased Loved One

By Paul Silva

One of the truths of our being is death. All of us have to face it and is yet not ready for it. Remembering the dead is a very old practice that has been constantly changing to suit the present times. A traditional funeral service used to be held in church, with specific hymns, poems and a eulogy for the deceased. However, the practice has witnessed significant change over time as a large number of people now desire to go for a customized service for their near and dear ones.

Planning a funeral service, immediately after the death of a loved one can be quite a disturbing and painful experience. The fundamental misconceptions about funeral services include that this is a legal necessity, which it most certainly isn't.

Secondly, many people think that a service has to be conducted in a church, which is again untrue. It is to be noted that even though traditionally such services were held in a church, with the trend of personalizing, a lot of funeral services are being held within the premises of the departed.

Thirdly, such services do not mandate the involvement of any clergy or priest or even a casket as a compulsory requirement.

With the increase in choice for personal funeral services, it is important to keep the dead person in mind while planning for it. The music to be played at the service must be soothing as well as from the favourites of the departed. You have the option of playing recorded music or engaging a live music band.

There is also a growing trend of exhibiting the personal items of the departed to display his or her true nature to the whole world. Address is extremely important in all funeral services inclusive of the personal ones. It could be a poem, a song or a personal speech that aptly describes the dead person.

Lastly, it is advisable to present the people assembled for the funeral with some mementoes that help them keep the memories of the deceased alive for years.
